On December 14, Restore Grand Isle and the Grand Isle Garden Club organized a successful day of environmental restoration, bringing together volunteers from Grand Isle and across Louisiana. The event included both tree and iris planting projects, aimed at beautifying the island and fostering sustainability for future generations.
A huge thank you to all the incredible volunteers who made this day a success! These special projects were made possible through a Keep Louisiana Beautiful grant, and they reflect the shared commitment of Restore Grand Isle and the Grand Isle Garden Club to preserving and restoring the island’s unique environment.
Restore Grand Isle and the Grand Isle Garden Club planted Live Oak and Citrus Trees around the old Community Center and playground, along with a variety of fruit trees in the Grand Isle Community Garden. These efforts will enhance the island’s green spaces, providing shade, beauty, and sustainability.
Volunteers worked alongside the Louisiana Iris Conservation Initiative (LICI) and the Town of Grand Isle to plant the I. giganticaerulea species iris at The Nature Conservancy’s Lafitte Woods – Gilletta Tract. This project, which began in 2018, continues to restore native iris populations and preserve Grand Isle’s natural beauty.
“We are so grateful to the volunteers and to Keep Louisiana Beautiful for their generous grant,” said Mayor David Camardelle. “The trees and plants will not only beautify our island but also help preserve our environment for generations to come. Events like these remind us of what makes Grand Isle special—a community that comes together to protect and enhance the place we all love.”
The Grand Isle Garden Club and Restore Grand Isle and its partners are dedicated to making the island more beautiful and sustainable for future generations. If you’d like to get involved in future events, contact us to learn how you can make a difference!
